A Secret Noise

"A Secret Noise" (2023–   )

Javier Ariza Pomareta

In 2023, Professor Javier Ariza initiated at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Cuenca (University of Castilla–La Mancha, Spain) a participatory radio project, open-ended and ongoing over time, entitled A Secret Noise.

To carry it out, a small radio transmitter is used to broadcast digital audio content in stereo quality over the air, which can be tuned to 87.5 FM. The transmitter is small in size and very low-powered; it runs on 12V DC and is housed inside a wooden box that conceals it. The compact size and light weight of the box allow for a portable, nomadic placement. Its broadcast range—just a few dozen meters—is as limited as it is intentional: sufficient to be received in the central interior areas of the building. The box containing the transmitter does not necessarily need to be visually exposed to the public.

The content of the broadcast is provided by students and collaborators who submit audio files in mp3 format, freely chosen (any kind of sound material, whether recordings or edited files), with a maximum duration of one minute: secret sounds whose radio transmission lacks presentation, explanation, and authorship.

These sounds make up the programming of a sound module—subject to change on a daily basis—of indeterminate duration, which repeats continuously in a constant loop.

To listen to the broadcast, a radio receiver (or any electronic device capable of receiving over-the-air radio transmission) is required, tuned to 87.5 FM.

Radiated sounds.
Changing sounds.
Secret sounds.
Unnoticed sounds.
Latent sonority and listening.

Current location: tune to 87.5 FM inside the Faculty of Fine Arts of Cuenca.
